The project involved the Emergency Repair Design of the Timber Substructure along the eastern end of both Piers C and D in Weehawken, NJ. The project was fast-tracked due to the severity of deterioration to the timber substructure as a result of infestation by marine borers (Teredo), which included the timber underdecking, timber pile caps and timber pilings.
Boswell Engineering procured the necessary permits to carry out the repairs, including both the Army Corp of Engineers (ACOE) and the New Jersey Department of Environmental Protection (NJDEP). Inspection of the contractor’s repairs was subsequently performed to ensure compliance with the repair designs. The project also included developing a long-term maintenance plan for keeping the remainder of the pier functional. The plan was augmented with various repair schemes, phased repairs over time, and the associated order of magnitude costs for affecting those repairs.
