The project involved the addition of a 230kv line to an existing 34.5kv substation to provide backup power to neighboring towns which ran simultaneously with the Rocktown 230kv Transmission Line project. This project included the acquisition and clearing of several wooded lots (3 acres) to allow for the construction of a new 230kv substation. In order for the new 230kv substation to be energized, strategic planning and coordinating was required between three utility companies and PJM to minimize service interruption.
The 230kv substation expansion project consisted of blasting 7,000 cy of rock, installation of 15,000 sf of a modular prefabricated wall system (Doublewal), 65 concrete foundations for dead-end structures, buss support structures and breaker foundation, a transformer foundation, a control house foundation, seventeen drainage structures (manholes, bypass, up-flow filters, outlet control and catch basins), 600’ of reinforced concrete pipe, installation of temporary utility poles and electric distribution circuit, relocating electrical pull boxes and erecting steel equipment support structures. The project also included the installation of three 230kv 3,000amp and one 34.5kv 3,000amp Sulfur Hexafluoride Circuit Breakers.
