With a population of about 1 million people, Astana is a developing and growing capital that will be the headquarters of the 2017 Expo “Future Energy.”

The Astana International Airport will be the transportation center for this main event, and a reference point for the future international connection for the city of Astana.

The forecast, increase in passengers at Astana International Airport, shows that an airport capacity of 8 million passengers per year will be required by 2020. The current traffic is approximately 3 million annual passengers, but this is increasing at a rate of approximately
15% per year.

The airport will be composed of a main building and 3 four level high fixed links for a total average of 50.000 sqm. The Roof (+16.125 m above the ground level) is the characteristic element of the building and is made from a series of broader bays with a double curvature profile, inspired by the natural curvature of a wing of an eagle wing and its overlapping feathers. The structural arrangement is composed of a series of 24 m wide orthogonal rectangular bays with a twisting double curvature roof.
